February Service Projects

Dignity U Wear

On  February 2, 2013, North Florida Health Corps members volunteered at Dignity U Wear located in Jacksonville. This service project fostered team building and positively impacted the lives of many children in Jacksonville. Health Corps members sorted incoming clothing to ready it for for local school children and their families, and helped to sort 2.5 pallets. Dignity U Wear improves the lives of children and families by providing brand new clothes at no cost to the recipient. Moreover, Dignity U Wear mission is to "positively impact  the lives of children and their families in need by providing brand new clothing." NFHC Member Tristan Morioka said 

"The project addressed issues of people not being able to afford
basic necessities or perhaps business casual clothes that are required
for certain jobs and interviews. When an individual is living on a
fixed income it is impossible for them to spend $100 on clothes for an
interview or some such thing. Dignity-U-Wear provides them with an important service."

Camp Boggy Creek

Camp Boggy Creek is a year round camp serving children with serious illnesses throughout Florida. The children who attend camp have handled themselves with grace and poise, and demonstrated strength much beyond their years in the face of the most crippling and isolating experiences anyone can endure. The mission of Camp Boggy Creek is to create an exciting, empowering, and safe environment where these children have the opportunity to feel “normal” and simply be kids.  The camp is free of charge to all those who attend and relies solely on the generous support of individuals, healthcare partners, and volunteers.

As “Family Pal” volunteers, NFHC members were paired up with families for the weekend and acted as their host. They were responsible for playing with the family and ensuring they had an unforgettable weekend! Tristan Morioka said "Even though we started off as complete strangers, I felt that after a mere 2 days of camp activities, family meals and catchy sing-a-longs, we had built such a strong bond that it was difficult to say “goodbye”. I had quite an experience getting to know each family, hear their stories, and enrich the lives of amazing children."
